Top 10, Week 7

A top ten based on record, a lack of losses, and difficulty finding something to say about fifteen other teams:
  1. Alabama (7-0) The defense continues to control games, even with its top DB (Arenas) out against South Carolina.
  2. Florida (6-0) Great teams win even when they don't play their best. Tebow continues to show that his heart and grit are almost unmatched.
  3. Texas (6-0) Like Florida, a three-point win, though theirs was against a ranked opponent at a neutral site. Play another few games against better competition and then you might deserve to be a bit higher.
  4. Iowa (7-0) They've come a long way since their opener squeaker-win that first week. Wins at Penn State and Wisconsin are stronger than the other undefeateds.
  5. Cincinnati (6-0) Big win on Thursday night at South Florida. Four wins on the road already.
  6. Boise State (6-0) They continue to win, which is all that can be asked for.
  7. TCU (6-0) Another just-keep-winning team.
  8. Miami (5-1) What would have happened if their game with Virginia Tech hadn't been played in a monsoon?
  9. LSU (5-1) With an extra week to lick their wounds from Florida, they may fire back with better play and focus.
  10. Oregon (5-1) Tops in the Pac-10 right now, controlling their own destiny.
Apologies to:
USC: Oregon's loss to Boise is a better loss than to Washington.
Georgia Tech: Still in good position to take the ACC

  1. Sweet! I like your system of privileging unbeaten teams. Seems wrong to give the spot to a team that's been beaten over a team that hasn't done anything wrong, though I realize that SOS needs to be taken into consideration sometimes. For example, I might need to see TCU play BYU next week before I'm willing to give them the seven-spot.

I'm right with you on 1-6, though I still think 1 and 2 are pretty interchangeable.

7 is LSU (I don't understand how they can drop after holding the then-#1 team to 13 pts).

Oregon at 8 (again, I can't punish a team for losing to someone ranked higher than them--that's what's supposed to happen!).

TCU at 9, at least until next weekend--if they beat BYU, I'll move them way up.

10 is a tough call between USC, Miami, and GTech. USC has beaten better opponents, but they also lost to a worse one. Miami lost to and GTech beat what I thought was a good VTech team. For that reason, depsite the rain, I've gotta put GTech above Miami--VTech blew Miami OUT, after all. I'm putting the Jackets at 10. USC at 11 and Miami at 12. Though, those three are about as interchangeable as the top 2.
